HAR2009 - hacking at random: The program

The moment everyone has been waiting for has arrived! We are proud to present the HAR2009 program: more than 100 talks on technology, encryption, surveillance, privacy, vintage hardware, free content, environmental issues, lock picking, open source software, DRM, censorship and more. The list of talks is long, and it is quite impossible to zoom in on each of the talks in this short announcement. However, we’d like to highlight some of our favorite talks. And do feel free to dive into the program and explore what’s there.

The program is headlined by Wikileaks exposing the inner workings of state and corporate power. Facing legal actions, censorship, assasinations and other unpleasantries, Wikileaks aims to publish information that is being repressed for whatever reason. In their talk, Wikileaks will explore the stories behind some of the most interesting leaks and present the Most Wanted Leaks of 2009. The importance of leaking and the relation to the brewing climate of censorship worldwide will be followed by an analysis about how the media shapes and creates history.

Today, electronic surveillance is ubiquitous. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) will look at the situation in the United States, and explain how the lessons that they learned might translate to the European situation. Recently, the EFF introduced a set of guidelines for individuals to protect themselves from surveillance (the Surveillance Self-Defense project), to opt-out of some of the regulations and practices that one might find objectionable or inappropriate. They do this by explaining relevant laws and introducing technological countermeasures, as well as comparing the relative security of different technologies people use in everyday life to ward off government surveillance.

Finally, we’ll have a really interesting series of talks that deal with one of the last bastions of apparent security: the GSM network. For over a decade, people have been lulled into a false sense of security regarding their conversations and communication over the GSM network. Voice communications are encrypted using the A5 encryption algorithm. Initally not disclosed, the algorithm was reverse engineerd almost 10 years ago. The first of the three talks will look at the current state of attacks on this algorithm. The second talk will introduce airprobe, a suite of software and hardware (based on GNURadio) that can be used to sniff and then analyze GSM transmissions. And if that wasn’t enough, the last talk will present openbsc: a open stack of software that can be used to set up your own GSM base station.

This is only the top of the proverbial iceberg, and besides lectures expect to see a Capture-the-Flag contest (where the objective is to capture a virtual flag hidden on a server by breaking into the server), a panel discussion on copyright and the entertainment industry with representatives from ‘the dark side’, workshops on electronics, reprap rapid prototyping, hacker jeopardy, a cartoon quiz and more.

On Monday 29 the French trade union CGT has evicted the undocumented migrants (sans-papiers) who had occupied the Bourse du Travail for more than a year. They demanded respect from the CGT in their struggle for acceptance in France.

Chez elle, la CGT n’aime pas les sans-papiers. Expulsion. Le service d’ordre du syndicat a fait évacuer la Bourse du travail de Paris, hier.

Matelas sous le bras, sacs et couvertures à la main, ils sont sortis un à un, sous le regard des CRS. Sur le trottoir, bordé par des dizaines de fourgons de police et de cars de CRS, des femmes pleurent, en état de choc. Après quatorze mois passés à vivre jour et nuit dans les locaux de la Bourse du travail à Paris, les occupants de ce grand bâtiment proche de la place de la République se sont retrouvés à la rue hier midi, évacués de force.

.Africains en situation irrégulière, ils étaient autour de 500 à y vivre en permanence et près de 1 200 par intermittence. Qui a mené l’opération ? Les évacués ont vite accusé non pas la police mais la CGT, qui aurait envoyé son service d’ordre faire le sale boulot. Scénario que le syndicat a fini par reconnaître quelques heures plus tard : «Après avoir essayé en vain de négocier pendant des mois, nous avons décidé de mettre un terme à une occupation qui était devenue un squat», justifie Patrick Picard, secrétaire général de l’Union départementale de Paris.
Pourquoi un syndicat qui monte régulièrement au créneau sur la question
des travailleurs sans-papiers a-t-il délogé. des travailleurs sans-papiers
? D’abord pour récupérer son lieu de travail, la CGT disposant d’une
partie du bâtiment. Ensuite, le syndicat entretient depuis le début des
relations tendues avec les occupants, pour la plupart travailleurs isolés,
employés dans le nettoyage ou la sécurité, qui se sont rassemblés dans un
collectif autonome, la CSP 75 (coordination des sans-papiers), sans jamais
vouloir se rapprocher de la CGT pour les demandes de régularisation.

Après plusieurs semaines de menaces, la CGT a donc envoyé hier «quelques
dizaines de militants», qui n’ont pas fait les choses à moitié. Les
témoins décrivent tous la même scène, très brutale : vers 12 h 30, alors
que, comme chaque mercredi, le gros des occupants manifestait place du
Châtelet pour réclamer des régularisations, une trentaine de gros bras,
«crânes rasés», brassard orange, masqués, ont débarqué armés de «bâtons»
et de «bonbonnes de lacrymo», les yeux protégés par des «lunettes de
piscine». Gazés, les occupants sont contraints de quitter les lieux. La
police, arrivée «dix minutes plus tard», reste à la porte du bâtiment,
faute, explique-t-on, de réquisition du propriétaire, en l’occurrence la
mairie de Paris. CRS et pompiers suivent.

«ratonnade»,«nettoyage»,«Sarkozy assassin». Certains jurent reconnaître
parmi les policiers en civil présents les mêmes qui ont forcé le bâtiment une demi-heure plus tôt. Dans les rangs de la police, on ne nie pas avoir eu des hommes présents, «comme chaque mercredi, pour encadrer la manifestation», mais on se défend d’avoir participé à l’évacuation, menée «par le service d’ordre de la CGT». En fin de journée, les sans-papiers achevaient de débarrasser leurs affaires, sans savoir où ils allaient passer la nuit. Impossible pour l’heure de réoccuper le bâtiment, bloqué par la police.

Defective by Design: Friday DRM News

Hello, my name is Sarah and I am working at the FSF this summer as part of a newly launched internship program. I will be posting new DRM news each Friday. If you'd like to know more about me read my letter of introduction. If you see stories we should mention here, please let me know.

Many companies are still putting DRM on their products, even though it has repeatedly been shown that it does not prevent filesharing. An empirical study done by Patricia Akester, a professor of law at Cambridge, found that DRM does more harm than good on an individual basis and in one instance even led the consumer who otherwise would not have to obtain an illegally shared copy. This user, who is sight-impaired, downloaded an ebook from Amazon and was surprised to learn that it did not enable the text-to-speech option. Upon contacting Amazon, which does not refund ebooks, she was referred to the publisher who in turn referred her back to Amazon. Not receiving any help from Amazon or the publisher, she then decided to download an illegal copy that provided the text-to-speech function. As Nate Anderson writes, “The study confirms what anyone who has ever wanted to rip a DVD to their computer or iPod could have told you: DRM, coupled with anticircumvention laws, makes pirates of us all.”

This is reminiscent of an investigation completed by Random House publishing, which found that not one of their DRM-free audiobooks sold on eMusic.com could be found being illegally shared. DRM is unethical and coercive to begin with -- if it doesn't even prevent illegal sharing, why are companies like Telecom, and Amazon still releasing products with it? Telecom recently launched the biggest mobile music store in New Zealand, complete with DRM. The DRM on the downloaded songs does not allow for the songs to be used on any other devices except those that work with Telecom's XT networks. On Amazon's Web site, it boasts to allow users to “... wirelessly re-download books for free anytime.” Unfortunately, this claim is not true. There is a limit that is placed on the amount of times a user can re-download a Kindle book, making this another example of it being a Swindle. One user unpleasantly found this out after he switched from his iPod Touch to an iPhone, but was not able to upload all of his books back on his Kindle reader application. After contacting Amazon, he was informed that he had re-downloaded his books too many times. He was told by an Amazon representative that Amazon does not even know how many times a user is permitted to re-download a Kindle book, despite the claim on their Web site.

Companies must not restrict freedom as a marketing strategy. As David Lee, a gaming industry examiner writes, “...it’s a case of demand not matching up with prescribed delivery methods." Hopefully companies will retire DRM and use demonstrated ways to market their products that do not infringe upon their customers rights. There is still a need for a system that encourages creative distribution through an incentive system, but that system should not work by infringing on users' rights. DRM's influence over users is decidedly negative, and on top of that it just doesn't work.

Notas del Sur: Guerrero: partes de guerra

En indymedia México publican una cronología de hechos recientes en la zona de la montaña y tierra caliente del sureño estado de Guerrero, donde en días recientes se multiplicaron los hostigamientos contrainsurgentes del Estado Mexicano contra la población civil y contra la prensa, luego de que fuerzas guerrilleras del ERPI declararan a medios de comunicación que actuarían militarmente porque el gobierno mexicano les “orillan a hacerlo (a actuar así), porque no entienden de otra manera”, según dijeron.

Los últimos hechos de violencia relacionada con esta coyuntura de guerra incluyen el asesinato de un campesino por parte de tropas del ejército mexicano (23 de junio) y el ataque armado (25 de junio) contra las viudas de dos activistas ecologistas asesinados supuestamente por grupos paramilitares.

En este contexto Amnistía Internacional se sumó a las voces de organizaciones civiles mexicanas qe denuncias casos de tortura contra la población civil por parte de tropas del ejército mexicano.

Cronología

8 de junio. Once años después de la masacre de El Charco, Ayutla (Costa Chica), los pobladores afirman que no se ha hecho justicia ni en este caso ni en el de Raúl Lucas Lucía y Manuel Ponce Rosas.

9 de junio. El director del Taller de Desarrollo Comunitario, Tadeco, recibió amenazas telefónicas en donde dijeron «conocer sus movimientos».

10 de junio El defensor de derechos humanos y miembro del Monitor Civil de la Policía y Cuerpos de Seguridad Pública Rommel Chacán recibió una amenaza anónima vía telefónica. Los amenazantes aseguraron tenerlo «bien vigilado».

11 de junio. Se registran enfrentamientos entre el Ejército federal y el ERPI, en los que se dispara hacia la población desde helicópteros y los habitantes de Puerto de las Ollas se ven obligados a huir hacia los montes. En el momento se habla de un choque del Ejército con narcos, pero no se confirma con certeza.

16 de junio. En los límites de Petatlán (Costa Grande) y Coyuca de Catalán (Tierra Caliente), elementos del Ejército tomaron la comunidad de Las Palancas. Según denuncias locales, los pobladores«fueron sometidos, amarrados, tapados de la cara y heridos con cuchillo», además de sufrir robos y amenazas. Los soldados apuntaron sus armas a un niño de 8 años. Dos jóvenes se reportan desaparecidos y la Comisión de Defensa de los Derechos Humanos pide medidas cautelares para las comunidades. El cerco duró cuatro días.

Esto sucedió apenas después que una comisión de organismos de derechos humanos hiciera una inspección en la zona y en un momento diferente, aparecieran sendas entrevistas al comandante «Ramiro» del ERPI , firmadas en «la sierra de Guerrero» en medios de difusión escrita. A la salida de los militares les relevaron policías estatales.

Dicha entrevista reveló, entre propaganda armada del grupo, que las fuerzas armadas federales protegen al expresidente municipal priísta de Petatlán Rogaciano Alba Álvarez, señalado como operador del narcotraficante Joaquín «El Chapo» Guzmán y se mantiene en la clandestinidad.

17 de junio. El ERPI admite oficialmente que hubo un enfrentamiento en los límites de Petatlán y Coyuca de Catalán.

Según la versión gubernamental, habrían muerto 15 guerrilleros y un soldado resultaría herido y se habría decomisado una importante cantidad de armas, municiones y uniformes; el ERPI, por su parte, afirma haber matado a 3 soldados y herido uno más sin sufrir una baja.

El grupo insurgente adjudica además al grupo «narcoparamilitar» de «Los Pelones» la desaparición forzada de los defensores indígenas mixtecos Raúl Lucas Lucía y Manuel Ponce Rosas ocurrida desde el 13 de febrero su y posterior ejecución .

En otro hecho, Un camión repartidor de La Jornada Guerrero fue tomado por asalto, por lo que la edición del día 16 no llegó a a varias de las regiones que tenía como destino.

19 de junio. Organizaciones sociales locales exigen la salida inmediata del Ejército y que el proceso jurídico en contra de quienes perpetran las violaciones a derechos humanos no sean llevadas por tribunales militares sino en el fuero civil.

20 de junio, soldados dispararon contra un autobús de la línea Sur después de inspeccionarlo en un retén en Huamuxtitlán (La Montaña). El autobús cubría la ruta Tlapa-Puebla. Al finalizar la revisión, los militares observaron que un jornalero indígena na’savi llevaba calzado tipo militar y le ordena descender y quedarse, hecho que provoca quejas del chofer de la unidad.

Al echar andar el vehículo, donde viajaban mujeres y niños, los militares abrieron fuego, matando al jornalero indígena de Tlapa Bonifacio Rubio Villegas. Horas después interrogaron al corresponsal de La Jornada Guerrero Jesús Rodríguez Montes, argumentando que se veía «sospechoso» cuando acudió a registrar el hecho.

El chofer Francisco Pizano y el indígena originario de Xilistlahuaca, Metlatónoc Fausto Saavedra Valera, se encuentran presos sin que conozcan el motivo de su detención.

22 de junio. La organización de derechos humanos Amnistía Internacional se pronunció respecto a la incursión militar en Coyuca exigiendo que la autoridad garantice seguridad a los residentes de la región en las comunidades Puerto de las Ollas, Las Palancas y El Jilguero.

Mientras tanto, en el poblado El Nanche, también en Coyuca, pobladores reportaron que elementos del Operativo Conjunto Guerrero quemaron una casa, saquearon e hirieron de un balazo a una joven maestra.

23 de junio. The first /tmp/toor took place in May, gathering greetings for the Metalab’s 3rd birthday from Karlsruhe, Munich, Linz, Prague, Dresden, Leipzig, Berlin, Hannover, Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Brussel, Luxemburg, Köln and Paris. Last Wednesday M2M went out to Alphen to visit Fofana and Imran Khan in prison. The security did not let us do that, so we walked around the building to meet and greet the prisoners on the West and the East. We exchanged some names and numbers and will try to communicate and facilitate.
Meanhwile, Fofana’s lawyer had informed M2M that he would be released this very day! So we stayed around until we could embrace the man. We asked several guards coming out from work if they knew Fofana, but all refused to talk with us. They have strict instructions NOT TO COMMUNICATE.
Well, we don’t and finally we met Fofana at the railway station, where he was dropped off in a blind combi.
He did not know that we were waiting for him, because the security had refused to tell him, so he was kind of lost.
He had never seen anything but prisons in the Netherlands. So there you are at a station under construction, with 2 heavy bags and nowhere to go.

So he was happy we found him! And then we went to a garden by the river and had a soft landing. And he started talking and talking.

We publish here some words, and will talk more with Fofana in the live prohgram this Friday evening.

HARdware village

If you forgot your FM receiver, perhaps the folks at the HARdware village can help out. Here is where much of the hands-on tinkering you might have heard about goes on; a large tent will be transformed into an electronics workshop where people work on interactive hardware projects. If that’s not enough to make ones mouth water, there will be rapid prototyping equipment: “printers” that can produce any shape in 3D. The possibilities are endless, add a 3D-scanner and you have a replicator. Add the designs of the machine itself, and it can reproduce.

If that’s too scary for you, there will be lots of interactive projects such as a capacitive touch dance music interface sculpture, a network of interactive couches with telephones built into the arms, a colored down-light indicator for which seating is the most popular. The sorts of people that may want to participate include hardware hackers, physical computing artists, industrial designers, coders, diy people, artsy people, and people that like to build things.

Curious? Grab some resistors, transistors and capacitors and head over to the wiki. There you will also find details on the mailing list where preparation for this village is coordinated. The village will start 5 days before the event, squeezing in some tent-building between soldering sessions.

The Next Layer: Continental Drift hypothesis - the turning point?

About four years ago, after the disastrous US elections in 2004, a group of us meeting at 16 Beaver Street in New York launched the idea of Continental Drift. The hypothesis: a coming "tectonic" shift in the geopolitical system, precipitated by the mismanagement of neoliberal globalization under the Bush-Blair regime. What we saw on the horizon was some kind of collapse of dollar hegemony -- "hegemoney," as Arrighi puts it -- and the rise of a multipolar order, with new possibilities and challenges for grassroots egalitarian movements around the world. Now that the credit-fuelled Anglo-American Ponzi scheme lies in ruins, is the world finally witnessing the beginning of those realignments? Four very recent economic developments suggest the answer may be yes.

--In Bali, Indonesia, on May 3, the ASEAN+3 group (the three being China, Japan, South Korea) transformed an already existing system of bilateral currency-reserve swaps into "a single regional pooling arrangement, comprising at least $120 billion of reserves. 20% of the funds will be provided by the 10 Asean members and the remaining 80% by the Plus Three countries."
The effect is to create an Asian Monetary Fund, able to intervene in currency crises as the IMF does today, but without imposing its neoliberal conditionalities. At this point, only 20% of the funds are effectively decoupled from IMF interventions; but the countries involved expect that percentage to grow. --On May 8 in Buneos Aires, Argentina, final ministerial agreement was reached on the launch of the Bank of the South, BancoSur: "The Bank of the South, started at the end of 2007 (and the brainchild of Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez), will have an initial capital of 7 billion US dollars (originally it was planned 10 billion), of which Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela will supply 2 billion US dollars each; Ecuador and Uruguay 400 million US dollars each and Bolivia 200 million."
This is not exactly a Latin American IMF, and 7 billion sounds like peanuts compared to the sums that vanish in a financial crisis. But it's the beginning of a chance for a coordinated Latin American industrial development that could finally close the "bleeding veins of Latin America" and turn the continent's resources into new possibilities for autonomous development, instead of cheaply priced export commodities feeding an endless cycle of dependency on manufactured goods from the global North. --Over the past 3 months, China has begun making good on its many proclamations of the need for a new international reserve currency, by setting up new trading agreements that involve payment, not in US dollars, but in the currencies of the countries involved, guaranteed against volatility by currency swap arrangements: "In the past few months, Beijing has concluded yuan swap agreements with a dozen countries. With some, like Russia and Brazil, China will pay yuan in return for a set amount of commodities. In this way, China will hedge future price fluctuations for commodities, which would influence its domestic industry, and these countries will receive payments in a currency that is bound to become more important. The swap agreements are still minimal. By the end of May, China's central bank had signed swap agreements totaling 650 billion yuan (US$95 billion) with a few countries, including South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia and Belarus, as well as Hong Kong. Furthermore, in June, Beijing signaled it would be willing to purchase some $60 billion of International Monetary Fund bonds [an international bond based on a pool of currencies, rather than the US Treasury bonds in which China has massively parked its foreign-exchange reserves]."
There is no sign here that China or any other country is going to "pull out" of the dollar or of American bonds, which would mean losing an enormous stake and setting off an even deeper economic crisis. Nonetheless, this gradual move away from the dollar is a clear expression of the will to place future patterns of trade on a very different basis. --On June 15-16, in Yekaterinburg, Russia (formerly Sverdlovsk), presidents Hu Jintao and Dmitry Medvedev attended a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO): "The alliance is comprised of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrghyzstan and Uzbekistan, with observer status for Iran, India, Pakistan and Mongolia. It will be joined on Tuesday by Brazil for trade discussions among the so-called BRIC nations -- Brazil, Russia, India and China. The attendees have assured American diplomats that it is not their aim to dismantle the financial and military empire of the United States. They simply want to discuss mutual aid – but in a way that has no role for the United States, for NATO or for the US dollar as a vehicle for trade."
What was being sketched out in Yekaterinburg is a full-scale Eurasian trading bloc associating the world's new manufacturing center, China, with the great resource peripheries of Central Asia. The frequent Counterpunch contributor Michael Hudson -- who is the progressive economist who immediately understood the implications of the collapse of the Bretton-Woods fixed-rate currency exchange system way back in 1971-73 -- has the most far-sighted analysis of this potentially major realignment:

--During this time, nothing of political-economic significance happened in the really existing regional bloc: the European Union. Except its continuing existence and its refusal to toe the Anglo-American line requiring massive debt-financing for "stimulus" on the backs of future generations. Or have I missed something?

The currency crisis of 1971-73 spelled the end of the postwar international system and set the stage for what would eventually be recognizable as the neoliberal period of 1982-2008. The end of dollar hegemony would mean that the period of neoliberal transnationalism ("Empire") is over. We're not there yet, but right now (the last two years) could well be the turning point. The new order, whenever and however it stabilizes, will not be engineered in Washington, New York and London, but will instead emerge from complex moves by a much wider range of actors, in a context of continuing economic, ecological and political crisis and seething social unrest. Not everything is going to be clear to the men and women in the street, and we will only really know what has happened to us a few years or even a decade from now, when and if the dust has settled. But in the meantime we may have the (dubious?) privilege of making history rather than just reading it!

The inmates of Block West A3 of the detention complex in Alphen a.d. Rijn (Between Amsterdam and Rotterdam) collectively refused to return to their cells on Friday 19th. All are undocumented migrants, like Fofana who is already one year detained. They fight again for their freedom, after some of them launched a hungerstrike before, on the 18th of February at Schiphol Oost. The action has been triggered by the suicide of a guy from Irak. It was inspired also by the visit of ten activists protesting the planned construction of yet another prison at Rotterdam Airport Zestienhoven.

The activists showed their phone number and the inmates started to call them, using LIPS cards. Later on one of them told M2M that it appears that the uprising was been cut short by riot police who forcefully pushed them inside their cells. Tomorrow is another day.

I’m in New York this week for the first public conference organized by the Open Video Alliance, which starts in a couple of hours. Participants hail from online video businesses to free software projects, filmmakers to academics.

On first hearing about the phrase ‘open video’, the first thought is naturally the suggestion of a parallel with (free and) open source software. But film of course is different from software, both as a ‘good’ and as an economy. So disentangling the substance of ‘open video’ from the slogan is a first priority. What we know from FLOSS is that success involves a combination of community construction, law, markets and technological standards. While my interests are more related to structures of collaboration, and the intersection with copyright and the politics of p2p, I’m also interested in the technology and history of cinema. In order to clarify my own views, I’m going to post a series of pieces over the next few days dealing with what I believe ‘open video’ can be.

The Stakes

Despite the technological developments of recent years, media markets remain highly concentrated. The range of views widely broadcast remains narrow; television remains padlocked to the logic of advertising; the number and form of stories told is limited; the division between broadcaster and receiver holds fast.

Open video implies putting in place the scaffolds, and dismantling the obstacles, to enable anyone who chooses to to speak back to that world of images that has fashioned the imagination, desire, sense of self and horizon of possibility.

Overladen as that may sound, few would object to the demand for greater scope for social criticism, self-expression and creative play. But in order to make it a reality, some toes have to be stepped on, and their owners insist that if their techno-economic models are not protected, the it will be then end of audio-visual production because no-one will invest in it. So in addition to persuading our ‘imaginary public’ of the virtues of open video, we must also reassure them that we are not leading them into a cultural desert. That means understanding the types of audiovisual works that have been made historically, and assessing how they can adapt.

So I’ll begin with a crude taxonomy of audio-visual works, then look at the struggle to control the film ecology historically. Next it’ll be time to consider who are the people of ‘online video’, what design factors are important in their communities, and a short section on technical challenges. Thereafter I’ll address sources of finance, before concluding with some legal and political considerations.

Types

Audio-visual production has many different levels, while we refer to all of the following as ‘film’, they require vastly divergent scales of resources. The possibility to create effective substitutes is not equal due to the differing scales of finance and physical infrastructure at the various points in the cycle of film production (here understood to mean the entire process from conception to consumption; the shooting of images will be referred to as origination). Of course all require labour and creativity.

Unlike information goods which can be produced anywhere so long as their inputs exist as information, film is usually site-specific. Excepted from this are recombinant works, and some experimental films. These forms have a well established history, pioneered perhaps by Bruce Conner in the 1950s, making movies without a camera through cut-ups, or Nick Macdonald’s ‘The Liberal War’, a critique of the Vietnam war filmed entirely in his bathroom. In the other cases, origination of the necessary images requires the presence of at least a camera operator.

In general however it is useful to think about the production process as composing two segments: origination and post-origination processing.

Successful collaborative production of information goods relies on the possibility to bring larger tasks into smaller units for later integration (modularity), and also on the ability to harness large numbers of contributions of different sizes (granularity). The aggregation of small bits of labour possible in wikipedia is not possible in film origination; contributors must be present and thus in itself places a bar to participation (cf economics of performance in general). It is also not generally modular, at least that has been the experience so far. Serial novels, with each chapter written by a distinct author, or exquisite corpse type collective images are certainly possible but don’t generate much excitement.

But once the images are produced then contributions at fine levels of granularity become possible, particularly in terms of distribution and marketing.

Hollywood feature: Origination required; high budget; produced for market; privately financed. This is the form whose model is least amenable to reorganization. Blockbusters will however continue to amass significant income in the cinema theatres and through the licensing market to tv, cable etc. They also have merchandizing and other revenues derived from their prominence in the social imagination and the presence of stars. Ultimately these comprise a small section of the number of films produced, even though the dominate most people’s idea of what film is.

Television: Origination required; medium budget; privately or internally financed; produced for market

Documentary: Origination required; low-medium budget; equipment commonplace; privately or subsidy financed; produced for market

Experimental film: Some origination required; physical equipment commonplace; low/no budget; endogenous motivation – produced for pleasure/curiosity

Amateur film: Physical equipment required; low/no budget; endogenous motivation – produced for pleasure/curiosity

Recombinant film: No origination required; physical equpment commonplace; low/no budget; endogenous motivation – produced for pleasure/curiosity

Advertisements and music videos: origination required, produced on commission, privately financed

Who are the users of online video and what role can they play within an open audio-visual ecology?
To understand the dynamics behind participation it’s important to consider both the motivations and, where they exist, the incentives which are in place.

(1) consumers in search of entertainment
(2) producers native to the online environment
(3) Amateurs
(3) Propagandists, proselytizers, whistleblowers, advertizers
(4) those trying to break into the industry mainstream
(5) industry professionals

Consumers form numerically the most important part of the online video population, but consumption a problematic term for cultural goods, as it is always in part productive. Culture is a relational good, and its market is characterized by a surplus of production. Works which succeed must be adopted by users who promote them by talking about them, incentivizing others to experience them as well. Advertising campaigns can be seen as mechanisms whose aim is to kick start this process, but the abiding importance of the relational aspect is witnessed by cultural institutions such as the NY Times bestseller list or the Top 40/100 in music or what have you. In the online environment , this importance is magnified due to the formation of many specialized communities and the possibility to amplify one’s own cultural preferences and recommendations. This productive viral aspect to consumption is essential, because absent the finance needed to generate attention on the scale practiced by the industry, open video producers must fin other means of acquiring visibility. In addition, consumers ultimately finance/provide the revenue stream fora large part of production, be that indirectly as an advertizing market, or directly through payment or donation. Users can also be key distributors as in the case of p2p networks, on which more later.

Those who come to online video production without any offline experience constitute an important part of film output. They are least likely to have incentives in line with industry models or to accept the accompanying norms. Making money is a minor concern, as they are simply taking advantage of what the technology affords them the possibility to do. Socialized in an environment with little interest in copyright rules, they make use of all materials available to them and are the fulcrum of production for what a lawyer would describe as unauthorized derivative works. This output is important as it in turn reshapes the experience of the audiovisual environment, altering again the normative baseline.

Amateurs have widely varied motives but that of commercial success is marginal. Important originators of images, this is a group which have exited sine the earliest days of cinema and whose ranks have expanded with the growing accessibility of cameras and other necessary technologies such as audio recorders, projectors and editing equipment.

As in other areas of online production, the profile of the amateur has significantly blurred. Where previously TV/Motion Picture industry practices kept amateurs at arms length with requirements such as ‘broadcast standard’, the promiscuous online environment enables more mobility for amateur production.

Distinguished from other producers by their motivation set, we could also add another group here, namely those whose production has always been driven by other incentives: proselytizers, educators., whistle-blowers. From the Rodney King camera operator – whose output is driven by being a witness, present at the scene at the right time – to the independent video activist to religious proselytizing, to the incidental producer.

Producers of advertizing, promotional and corporate videos etc have a simple incentive to produce: they are paid to do so and work on commission.

Former and current students of film and video provide a source for original productions.
